Patriotism begins at home! Start your Independence Day celebrations with a patriotic breakfast in an array of red, white and blue foods that are easy to prepare. The three following entrees are sure to please the eyes as well as the tummies of those at your breakfast table.
Wake the family up to flag waffles. To decorate waffles like an American flag, remove from waffle iron or toaster. Spread grape, blackberry or blueberry jelly in the upper corner of each waffle, and top with coconut flakes.
Use coconut flakes or whipped cream topping to form white stripes and strawberry, cherry or raspberry preserves to form red stripes on the remaining portion of the waffles. The children will love these and enjoy helping decorate their own.
Patriotic Yogurt and Berries Parfait
This great breakfast entrée can be made ahead in festive parfait glasses. Add a hefty spoonful of vanilla or plain Greek yogurt to each parfait glass.
Then add a handful of raspberries, pitted cherries or diced strawberries. Top with another layer of yogurt and then a handful of blackberries or blueberries. Repeat layers until parfait glasses are full. Serve with a mini American flag on top!
Red, White and Blue Fruit Bowl
A bowl of fruit is delicious anytime of day. Toss diced, seeded red watermelon, whole blueberries and coconut flakes into a glass bowl and chill before serving.
Another fruit salad variation we like, shown in the top photo is to toss chopped Gala apples, with the peel, blueberries and Greek Yogurt together. Sweeten with honey, or stevia to taste, and enjoy!
