If you’ve never grown fruit before, adding blueberry bushes to your landscape is the ideal introduction. Besides growing blueberries for its wonderful taste, and nutritional value, from a gardener’s perspective, blueberry plants are appreciated for its low maintenance and ability to endure cold temperatures. Another plus, blueberries are hardy and can usually be grown without pest control.
Autumn is an ideal time to plant blueberry bushes, when the plant is dormant, with no appearance of fruit. Planting blueberry bushes in the fall allows the root system to become well established in the soil before fruit production begins. However, blueberries can be successfully planted in spring, just wait until after the typical last frost.
Although it generally takes three to five years for a blueberry plant to generate a substantial yield, even the smallest of plants will produce some berries the first or second summer.

With a little care, an established, unpruned blueberry plant will reach a height of 10 to 12 feet, and should produce berries for 20 to 30 years before needing to be replaced. What a great return on a small investment!
